“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself, just as I am, then I can change.” – Carl Rogers
Therapy for Individuals
Therapy is designed to help individuals overcome a wide range of emotional and behavioural issues that may be causing distress in their lives. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship problems, or other mental health concerns, individual therapy can provide you with a safe and supportive space to explore your thoughts and feelings, gain insight into your behaviours, and develop coping skills to improve your overall well-being.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO, 2022) 1 in 8 people are affected by mental health issues. The top 6 disorders are:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Bipolar Mood Disorder
- Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Schizophrenia
- Eating Disorders
Since Covid, anxiety and depression in the world population has increased by 28%.
Services
Individual therapy is a powerful tool for personal growth and self-discovery. Gain a better understanding of your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, explore past experiences and how they may be impacting your current life, and develop new ways of thinking and behaving to help you achieve your goals and live a more fulfilling life. Some of the challenges I help my clients navigate include:
Anxiety
I have created reading material for my clients specifically looking at how the brain (neuro) reacts to anxiety and how that affects emotions, thinking and behaviour. Devised a 6-part mindfulness based stress reduction workshop to treat anxiety.
Depression
I have devised a 6-part workshop series to tackle depression and teach individuals how to improve their mood. When people feel depressed they often withdraw from others and feel more and more negative. Helping them change their mind-set and getting into a routine of sleep, appetite, exercise.
Bipolar Mood Disorder
Individuals can experience extreme highs and lows in their mood. Learning how to manage these elevations and dips in the mood is vital to the management of this disorder.
Eating Disorders
Eating disorders – can manifest in restrictive eating, fear, anxiety, and depression. This can affect the physical health of individuals. Understanding the root cause of the restrictive, binge-eating and finding health alternatives are a focus of therapy.
PTSD
South Africa has amongst the highest incidences of traumatic events. The number of people suffering with post trauma is extremely high. Creating a safe caring environment to discuss the trauma and using a combination of the various trauma theories and models (EMDR, CBT, Hypnosis) I try to assist my clients towards post-trauma growth.
Suicide Prevention
This is a topic that is rarely spoken about. People are generally ashamed to mention that they have contemplated suicide. In my practice I encourage my clients to speak about these thoughts so that we can find healthy resolutions.
Medical Conditions
IBS, HIV, Cancer, Diabetes, Psoriasis, are some of the health conditions that I actively work with. In 2022 and 2023 I delivered talks to the Diabetes Association of South Africa regarding the role of stress on the disease. My Masters research was on the psycho-social dimensions of psoriasis.
Substances
Substance use, dependence, abuse, addiction – often co-exists with another disorder. People report a high relapse rate and therefore staying in treatment and following a multi-dimensional approach of therapy, support groups, rehab groups, and medication can offer positive results. Behavioural change models are integral to my practise and rehabilitation of my clients.

How Do I Know If This Is Right For Me?
As a psychologist, I understand that seeking therapy can be a daunting experience. However, I assure you that therapy can be a transformative experience that can help you gain insight into your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, leading to a more fulfilling life.
Therapy is a collaborative process where you and I work together to identify and address the challenges you are facing. Throughout our sessions, we will discuss your concerns, identify patterns in your thoughts and behaviour, and develop strategies to help you achieve your goals.
One of the most significant benefits of therapy is the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of yourself.
What is therapy?
Therapy, also known as counselling or psychotherapy, is a process where individuals work with a registered mental health professional to address emotional, behavioural, or mental health issues. Therapy can be conducted with an individual, in couples or family sessions, or in a group setting. The goal of therapy is to help individuals improve their well-being, learn coping skills, and make positive changes in their lives.
What to expect during a therapy session
During a therapy session, you will meet with a registered mental health professional who will listen to your concerns, offer guidance, and help you develop coping strategies. Sessions typically last between 50-60 minutes and can be conducted in-person or online. The frequency and duration of therapy sessions will depend on your individual needs and goals.
